Hopefully the dates shown below are correct, some of them have required some detective work! Please email me with any required amendments, msutton@asp.adelaide.edu.au
1986
1986 was the first year of the NPCGG coursework program, commenced with a welcome barbeque combined with an official launch of the Centre. Some familiar faces to look out for include Nick Lemon, Jim Jago, Dave Gravestock, Vic Gostin, Bob Laws to name just a few.
1987
This is the first year with a photo of graduating students
1988
Sediment coring at Myponga River
1989
This may have been the first year of Flinders Field Trip, it's certainly the first photos that have been located.
1990
Sorry the cupboard is bare!
1991
Peter Tingate with a group at Depot Creek
1992
1992 Flinders field trip
1993
The APCRC Workshop was held at Falls Creek and stories are still told of the consumption of Mitchells Peppertree Shiraz on the last night with associated stops on the trip back through along the winding roads. Bill Stuart also told of a huge bill for his room when he checked out, it seems that drinks had been charged back to his room whilst he was sleeping!
1994
1994 saw the launch of the NCPGG Alumni with a winery tour in the afternoon and a dinner at Lyrics Restaurant at the Festival Theatre in the evening. A very proud Bill Stuart handed out the Alumni gifts, a tie for the guys and a lapel pin for the girls, and everyone attending had a great night. It was the forerunner for alumni functions that have been held on an ad hoc basis since, normally in association with a conference.
1995
1995 saw the introduction of a couple of social activities, the fireworks night and a Christmas breakfast which is still held on the last working day of the year. The fireworks night was held out the back of the old premises in Stirling Street and the staff and students' kids had a lovely time stuffing the guy. Nick Lemon's son Phillip is shown in one of the photos, and I'm pleased to say that Phillip is currently with ASP, doing exceptionally well in the third year of his combined degree (Petroleum Engineering and Mechanical). 1995 was sadly the last year that Bill Stuart was well enough to attend any of the functions, passing away in April of 1996.
1996
In 1996 the Bill Stuart Memorial Fund was launched with a dinner at the Vietnam Village at Thebarton. The interest on the funds raised is used to support a scholarship stipend, initially awarded to Tom Kivior in 1998. The first NCPGG cocktail party was organised by some of the postgrad students and was held in Einsteins.
1997
An alumni dinner was held in Melbourne in association with the APPEA Conference at an interesting venue suggested by Chris Cubitt. When we were told "just tell the taxi driver it's over the road from the brothel" there was some concerns, but it was an excellent night. Several farewells were also held during the year, one incorporating a farewell for Peter Tingate who was about to head overseas for several months. A second alumni dinner was held in Perth as the APCRC had a workshop on Rottnest Island so the opportunity was taken to hold a dinner in the city with the biggest alumni group.
1998
The APCRC funded a scholarship in honour of Bill Stuart to support Tom Kivior in his PhD studies, this was in conjunction with the NCPGG administrated Bill Stuart Memorial Award. The official presentation was made by the CEO Peter Cook.
1999
In August of 1999, the NCPGG moved from one side of Stirling Street to the other. We filled three rubbish skips, untold paper recycling bins (all that seismic!), and had the scrap metal merchants around to collect redundant equipment. We won't mention the hernias caused by the new premises being on the first floor with no lift access. The group photo was taken at our final barbeque lunch in the old premises.
2000
There was quite a contingent of NCPGG staff and students who headed off to Bali to attend the AAPG Conference. The staff of the hotel soon found that saying goodnight to the group, didn't guarantee that they would go to bed.
2001
2002
In 2002 the NPCGG moved from its previous location at Thebarton in the Santos Petroleum Engineering Building on the North Terrace campus, facing Frome Road. More skips were filled, more redundant equipment made its way off of the assets register, and a huge process of packing and unpacking was undertaken. Many of you will have heard the story of the office decorations, maybe even seen the video put together by Scott Mildren, and a couple of the photos are included here. It was organised that John Kaldi had breakfast with Richard Hillis and Peter Behrenbruch, returning to quite a surprise when he opened the door of his new office, all captured on the video camera set up in the corner.
2003
In 2003 the format of the coursework field trip changed, with Simon Lang taking the group to the Amadeus Basin instead of the Flinders Ranges. That year the Cocktail Party had a Heroes and Villains theme.
2004
The first graduate of the Petroleum Engineering undergraduate program was Steven Roberts who had transferred into the second year of the program. 2004 also saw the first graduates of the Master of Petroleum Engineering degree.
2005
2005 was an exciting year for the petroleum engineers as it saw the graduation of the inaugural class for the Bachelor of Petroleum Engineering degree. This was also the first year of the ASP graduation dinner.
2006
To 2006 another Դradition' was instigated, a night of Aussie fare, the first International Night to celebrate the mix of cultures within the School. In one of the photos you can see the younger of the Tingate children, William John. Peter and Cathy hadn't realised they had named their son after the two directors of the NCPGG, Bill Stuart and John Kaldi. An alumni function was held in association with the AAPG International Conference held in Perth in November, thanks to Chris Cubitt again for choosing the venue, fortunately no brothel directions this time!
