Master of Petroleum Engineering

The Master of Petroleum Engineering (MPE) is a comprehensive technically focused program that also includes key technical management aspects. It is a program that meets the current need of the petroleum industry, where there is forecast to be a rapid decline in the workforce experience level due to its age profile. There appears to be a trend to recruit an increasing number of skilled petroleum engineers. Worldwide, undergraduate programs are not likely to meet such future demands.

One option is to retrain individuals that have a technical background in non-petroleum engineering areas. This program will provide such training and fill the developing industry gap, as has already been born out by similar programs, most notably in Europe.

A second need for the industry is continuing education for its professionals. For this reason, the MPE has been designed on a short course format, allowing industry personnel to participate on a single course basis. There is also the option for such individuals to complete the MPE over a longer period, taking up to five years. Depending on the preference, short course attendees may participate on a credit towards MPE or simply on a continuing education basis.

Cost

A minimum of 24 units must be completed (in accordance with the Academic Program Rules), more units may be taken for the degree after consultation with the program co-ordinator. Each unit has the value of AUD$1,000. A standard course cost is AUD$24,000. Some level of support through scholarships is available, though scholarships are highly competitive. As these figures and conditions may change, interested students should make enquiries concerning fees to the student administration section of the university.
