SPE Student Chapter
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is an international body representing
petroleum engineers and professionals world-wide. Ever since its formation it
has sought to act as a platform for engineers all around the world to develop
their technical knowledge and support the growth of the industry. The SPE also
represents students aspiring to pursue a career in the oil and gas industry.
After the opening of the School in 2002, the first batch of 23 students registered with the SPE as student members owing to the generosity of Halliburton. This was the first step towards the setting up of the Student Chapter of SPE in the University of Adelaide. The SPE South Australia Section, Adelaide, sponsored the opening of the Chapter in this University. By late October 2002, under the patronage of Professor Peter Behrenbruch and supervision of Dr Motiur Rahman, the SPE Student Chapter took shape. The first executive committee was elected. Carrie Broad was elected President of the Chapter. Bradley Shipway, Vice President (Activities), and Myles Reagan, Vice President (Memberships), were elected to assist Carrie in organising and planning further activities.
Every new academic year has brought increased membership with the intake of
another batch of undergraduate students and the arrival of more postgraduate students
at ASP. The Chapter has grown to 60 members. The increase required a larger body
to govern and plan the activities of the Chapter. The executive committee is as
follows:
- President
- Vice President (membership)
- Vice President (activities)
- General Secretary
- Treasurer
- Industry Liaison Secretary
- International Students Representative
- Postgraduate Representative
- Year 3 Representative
- Year 2 Representative
- Year 1 Representative
Mr Andrew A. Young, President of the SPE 2003, officially inaugurated the
Student Chapter of SPE at a ceremony held in the Santos Petroleum Engineering
Building on 25 March 2003. The Chapter now operates within the rules and regulations
of the SPE.
